From The Archives :: Swimming

I am so thankful for the year and a half of swimming lessons the kids had in S. Africa.  We've had many a swimming opportunity lately and the kids have excellently displayed their swimming skills!  Right before we left SA, it all "clicked" for Emma G.  She is swimming all over the place now!  This post was originally published February 6, 2009.

The kids resumed their swimming lessons last month. The first lesson of the month the parents get to watch, so this past Tuesday (in the pouring rain), we got to see their progress. Joshua always fights me on going to lessons but he is doing AWESOME! He's swimming all over the place and now she's teaching him techniques. Emma Grace loves going, but is still such a dreamer - not really concentrating and is "lazy" with her kicks. I think one day it will just click for her and she'll be swimming all over the place!

Here are my precious guppies in action!

From The Archives :: Harvest

You have no idea how much I'm missing this lovely garden!  Well, maybe you can understand my pain.  Our current little plot of garden has supplied us with a great amount of herbs but not much else.  Thank goodness for our friends here who farm and supply us with the benefits!  This post was originally published January 2, 2009.

When we returned to South Africa from our trip to the states, I was excited to see the garden had grown so much just in those few weeks. Fresh herbs, green beans everywhere, tomatoes, spinach and more to be ready soon. To see what it looked like just a couple of months ago, click here. So exciting to go and pick our dinner fresh! D-lish!

From The Archives :: Summer Lovin'

Although S. Africa and USA are an ocean apart, summer seems to bring the same loveliness no matter where you are.  This post was originally published January 6, 2009.  A year and a half ago, but it was our last official summer before this one.  I can't believe how much the kids have grown since then!

Havin' A Blast!

Lovin' the fresh veggies from my garden.
Spinach and strawberry salad. Yum!

Lovin' the extended daylight hours and eating dinner on the back porch.

Lovin' the honeysuckle that greets me at my gate when I return home. Oh, the smell!

Lovin' the trampoline the kids got for Christmas!

Lovin' the fruits of the season. Litchis and mangoes!

Yes, the Price's are havin' a blast this summer!

Reading...Deceived

This is not a paid review but simply some thoughts on a recent read.

Deceived

This book is ultimately about choices.  A series of bad choices leading into more and more deception can only lead to death of the spirit and soul.  On the other hand, good choices lead to life.  This is a great read that, once I got into it, I couldn't put down.  And the ending will blow you away.  I love it when that happens!

My Newest Little Toy

I've had this little gem in my Amazon wish list for about 5 months now.  I would LOVE to have a macro lens for my camera, but those are a little out of my price range right now.  Instead I thought I would try out some macro lens sets.  I really couldn't go wrong.  I saved up my Swagbuck's to cash in for Amazon gift cards and ended up only paying less than $5 out of pocket.

They came in a nice little case and fit my D40 perfectly, no adapter needed.  For the price I'm quite happy with these.  They take some getting used to, because they work like a magnifying glass really.  You kind of have to play around with the focus some and I found that it was a bit easier to shoot in manual focus (although the bright sunlight was a bit blinding so some were not quite in focus).  If you're looking into buying some lens filters, I would just recommend checking your lens diameter first.  All mine were 52 mm so these fit all of them!

Anyway, I had fun playing around with my new toy when it conveniently came in the mail just a few days before we left for vacation.  I have some knitting books and a recipe book in my wish list that I've been saving up for, but I went with these for now.  I thought they would be fun to have on our trip!

Meet Your New Local Artist

artist :: a person who practices any of the various creative arts

my prints

An artist. I would have never put that label on myself even 5 years ago.  But as my love for photography grows, I realize that yes, I am an artist.  It even feels more legit now that I have some of my photos for sale.  Yes, that's right FOR SALE!  I can't believe it!  Another new and exciting opportunity that came my way recently!

A friend of mine creates decoupage pieces and recently started selling them at a local shop.  She asked me if I wanted to put some photos up to sell!  I went through these crazy emotions.  I think it must be an artist thing.  I felt vulnerable selling my stuff.  Like what if it doesn't sell?  I might like what I see but what if other people don't?  It's all rooted in fear but still it was there.  I did overcome it and took the plunge.  Now if you don't live near the Frisco Mercantile, I also have unframed prints for sale in my shop.

Hairdresser House Call

my cut

The day we left I ended up getting my hair cut.  I feel like I just got it cut, but I guess it's been 2 months and it needed to be trimmed again.  The story is a bit interesting.  Worthy of a blog post, I guess.  And it gives me another one to schedule for while I am gone!

back

Anyway, I call myself the deal finder in this family, but my husband gets all the credit for this one!  My haircut dilemma is always where to go, so he was searching online and discovered that Toni & Guy does a model night on Tuesdays (call your nearest salon for details).  I went in for the consultation.  Unfortunately my hair was already too short for the cuts she needed to do.  So she offered to come to my house and cut my hair...for a fraction of the cost!

I was really happy with my cut.  These pictures are the best I can do taking them on my own.  We were all busy trying to get out the door so a photo shoot for my new do wasn't top priority. :)  I'm so happy to have a fresh cut for our trip!

Road Trippin' It

sabbatical checklist

So I've been a little tricky the past few days.  We are continuing on with our sabbatical checklist!  We left 5 days ago for our family vacation!  Thank goodness for auto scheduling posts, because I'm not planning on checking in during our 2 1/2 weeks away.  I have some posts scheduled this week (here as well as Today's Mama).  For next week, I've picked a few of my summertime favorite posts from the archives and re-posted them.  I'll be back in August with LOADS of vacation pictures!  See you then!
